Grass/Leaf Pick Up

The City of Parma has prepared the 2011 leaf collection schedule for this fall season, which will begin the week of October 24th. Due to the current economic situation, our service department staff has been placed on a seven hour per day work schedule instead of the previous eight hour day. This will hinder our ability to provide the same level of service as our residents are accustomed, and we ask residents to be patient and to follow some simple instructions during the weeks of their scheduled pick up:

  • Leaf collection is a preventative maintenance program to intended only to prevent blockage of the catch basins, sewer backup to residences, and prevent standing water during the winter months. The program is not intended to provide a landscaping service to our residents. Residents are limited to leaves from their tree lawn trees.
  • Rake your leaves to the edge of the curb. Be careful not to mix in grass, sticks, branches, or other debris that may cause damage to the equipment or cause injury to the workers.
  • Do not rake leaves into the street or block fire hydrants.
  • Do not park vehicles on the street in front of leaf piles. This will prohibit collection and will delay the process.
  • If a resident has a small amount of leaves, the resident is asked to bag them and dispose of them with regular rubbish collection. Leaves must be bagged and within the weight limit to be collected.
  • If during the scheduled pick-up times the resident has not put their leaves on the tree lawn, it is the responsibility of the resident to bag the leaves and put them out for regular rubbish pick-up.

The exact date/time of pick-up on a particular street is weather permitting and difficult to predict. The schedule below will indicate the dates leaf trucks will be in your area. Any further assistance, please call the Service Department at 440-885-8189 or 440-885-8980.

Hedge cuttings, limbs and branches must be securely tied not exceeding 3 feet in length and 35 lbs in weight. Cardboard boxes will be collected, but they should be flattened and bundled.

The following items are excluded from pick up:

Building material resulting from construction, remodeling, repair or demolition operations, dirt, sod and large automotive parts generated by a residential unit. Waste generated by commercial contractors is also excluded.

If you have a special circumstance, or if you question whether your trash would fall into one of these categories, please contact BFI directly at the number listed above.

Recycling (Curb Side)

BFI has purchased recycling trucks to allow for the separation of newspaper and other commingled products at the point of pick up.

  • Newspapers - In an effort to make recycling easier, place all newspapers in a separate blue plastic bag for collection. Please no magazines, phone books, milk cartons or other paper products.
  • Glass - Recycle all glass beverage bottles and jars. Please rinse containers and remove lids and neck rings. Paper labels do not need to be removed. Do not include used pesticide or herbicide containers, window glass, light bulbs, mirrors or ceramics. Please place them with your regular rubbish.
  • Plastic - Recycle rinsed milk containers and plastic soda bottles and containers that have the number 1 or 2 stamped on the bottom. Exclude items #3 through #7 plastic, motor oil, antifreeze, pesticide and herbicide containers. Please place them with your regular rubbish.
  • Aluminum & Steel Cans - Rinse aluminum and steel cans. Please remove all paper from the cans.

Collect glass, plastic, aluminum and steel cans and place them together in one blue plastic recycling bag. Place recyclables on the curb next to your rubbish on your scheduled collection day. Although your recyclable materials should be placed out at the same time as your rubbish, your blue bags may be picked up at a different time on that day. Please note that blue bags containing garbage, trash or rubbish will be left at the curb.

It is important that you tie your blue bags securely. If you crush metal and plastic containers, you will use fewer bags, saving money and storage place. It is not necessary to put out a bag every week, just put it out when full. Blue recycling bags are available wherever trash bags are sold.
